7 reasons women are trying 15 minutes of air compression at home
First, what lipedema is and what causes it. Then what research says about compression. Questions and limits are answered at the end.

What is lipedema?
Lipedema is a long term condition where painful fat builds up on both sides of the lower body, most often the buttocks, thighs and calves. It does not respond to diet and exercise the way ordinary fat does.
Common signs are a heavy feeling in the legs, swelling, pain that ranges from mild to severe, and skin that bruises easily. One global estimate says up to 11% of women have it, and many go years without a name for it. (Cleveland Clinic)

What causes it?
Nobody knows the exact cause yet. It often starts or gets worse at puberty, during pregnancy and at menopause, which points to hormones. It can also run in families. (Cleveland Clinic)
Where does compression come in?
There is no cure for lipedema. Treatments aim to help you feel better, and compression is one of the most common. Here are 7 reasons women are trying it, each from the research.
1It is a standard part of lipedema care
Reviews of lipedema care list compression garments and pneumatic (air) compression devices among the standard conservative measures, alongside diet advice, manual therapy and exercise. German guidelines recommend compression to ease lipedema symptoms and pain. Cleveland Clinic lists compression stockings and a pneumatic compression device among the options a provider may suggest.

2Socks by day can stop the evening swelling
In a study of people whose legs were measured in the morning and again 7 hours later, calf length compression stockings of 11 to 21 mmHg reduced, or completely prevented, the swelling that builds up over the day. The authors recommend them for jobs with long periods of sitting or standing. (Partsch et al., 2004)
That is why every Evenlegs order comes with 2 pairs of compression socks: socks for the day, the boots for the evening.

3Women reported less heaviness and swelling
In an 8 week trial of 24 women, those who wore compression leggings and did an exercise program reported less heaviness (from 7.5 to 4.5 out of 10) and less swelling (from 7.5 to 4.5) than women who only exercised. (Czerwinska et al., 2024)
In a 4 week pilot of 29 women who wore compression leggings and exercised, heaviness fell from 3.9 to 1.5 out of 5 and swelling from 4.0 to 1.7.

4Women reported less tenderness, pain and bruising
In the same 4 week pilot, spontaneous pain fell from 3.1 to 1.2 out of 5, sensitivity to touch from 2.8 to 1.1, and easy bruising from 2.7 to 1.4.
The 8 week trial also saw pain fall from 5 to 4 out of 10 in the compression group.

5Everyday movement got easier, and energy went up
In the 8 week trial, women who wore compression and exercised improved significantly in physical functioning and in energy and fatigue. The exercise only group improved in physical functioning too, but not significantly. (Czerwinska et al., 2024)

6It works best as a habit, and 15 minutes at home is an easy one
In a survey of 279 women with lipedema, 54% said compression garments relieved their symptoms. Women who wore them every day, or 5 to 6 days a week, reported a bigger reduction in symptoms than those who wore them less. (Paling, reported in Czerwinska et al., 2024)

7Air compression on top of garments: studies measured smaller legs
In a trial of 26 women, those who used a prescription air compression pump on top of compression stockings saw the circumference at the knee go down 8.3%, against 4.2% with stockings alone. Pain scores improved too. (Wright et al., 2022)
In a trial of 46 women, 30 days of a prescription pump, 1 to 2 hours a day, on top of compression leggings, reduced leg volume, leg fluid and the depth of the tissue under the skin, and eased swelling, tenderness, aching and bruising, compared with the leggings alone. (Herbst et al., 2025) In another study of 38 women, 5 days of care that included a pump reduced leg volume by about 5.6%. (Szolnoky, reported in a 2025 review)
A 2025 review says the results are best when the pump is combined with garments, which is the routine of socks by day and air compression in the evening.
A real result: my aunt
Her results are the reason I started Evenlegs. She wore compression socks during her walking hours and used the same air compression boots we sell in the evening, at the recommended settings and session length, sometimes with the socks on inside the boots. Here is her before and after.

Left: before. Right: after. She is the founder's aunt and was not paid. She used compression socks and the same boots we sell, together. Her result is her own, and results vary. See the questions below for what the studies found.
Why women pick Evenlegs at home
Evenlegs Boots bring air compression home: a slow squeeze from the foot to the calf, 15 to 20 minutes with your feet up, with 2 pairs of compression socks free for the day. Cordless or with a handheld remote, your pick.
Your legs follow the clock
Fine at nine. Heavy by six. Sock rings that take an hour to fade. That is a day of standing and sitting, and it settles in the lower legs.
Evenlegs Boots squeeze in slow waves from the foot up: air fills, holds for a moment, then lets go, again and again. The same idea as the inflating sleeves used in clinics, made for your sofa.

No more fighting your way into stockings
If you were ever handed compression stockings, you know the morning battle, the red lines by lunch, and the drawer they end up in. Compression only helps while it is on.
The boots open with one zip down the front, from the top of the calf to the toe. Sit down, step in, zip up, press start. Nothing to roll, nothing to pull.

Gentle when your legs are tender
When your legs ache to the touch, the last thing you want is something that grabs. You choose how firm the squeeze feels, and you start on the lowest setting. If it ever hurts, you stop. You stay in control the whole time.

No booking, no travel, no paying per visit
A massage or a session with a therapist is lovely once in a while. It is not there at 7 pm on a Tuesday. The boots are: one price, every evening, both legs at the same time, while you watch something or read.
Cordless or with a remote, your pick. The rechargeable pair has the controls right on the boot. The plug in pair has a handheld remote you can keep by your side.

A gift Mom will actually use
Thinking of your mom and her legs? Pick the cordless pair with the controls on the boot, or the pair with a handheld remote she can hold. There is one zip and nothing to set up. If Mom lives alone, you can walk her through it on a video call in a few minutes.

You get 30 days to decide
Use them at home for up to 30 days. Not helping? Send them back and we refund the boots. The two pairs of compression socks in every order are yours to keep, either way. The unit and its cord are covered for 12 months.
Questions and limits
Are these studies about Evenlegs Boots?
No. They studied compression garments and prescription air compression pumps. Evenlegs Boots have not been tested in a study, and we do not claim the same results.
How strong is the evidence?
Promising, but early. The studies are small (12 to 46 people) and short (a few days to 12 weeks). Some had no comparison group, and one was industry sponsored. The authors of the 26 woman trial call their results "suggestive, not conclusive", and a 4 week pilot of 29 women had no comparison group.
Does compression remove lipedema fat?
No. There is no cure for lipedema, and researchers say the purpose of compression is to relieve symptoms, not to reduce fat (Czerwinska et al., 2024). In the pump studies, the researchers put much of the change in leg size down to fluid, and results were best when the pump was used with garments, not instead of them. A survey cannot prove cause, and a change in one small trial (pain falling from 5 to 4 out of 10) was too small to call significant.
Do the boots treat lipedema?
No. Evenlegs Boots are a comfort device for tired, heavy legs. They are not a lipedema treatment, have not been tested for lipedema, and do not replace compression garments or care from your doctor or therapist.
Do the boots reach my thighs?
No. They wrap the foot, the ankle and the calf, up to just under the knee. They do not reach the thighs or hips, where lipedema often sits.
How do I know if I have lipedema?
Only a doctor can tell you. If the signs above sound like you, it is worth asking.
Can I use them if I have lipedema or another condition?
Ask your doctor or therapist first, especially if you have lipedema, a blood clot, a wound or a fracture on your legs, a heart or circulation condition, or you are pregnant. Start on the lowest setting and stop if it hurts.
Is my aunt's result typical?
Not necessarily. She used compression socks by day and the same boots we sell in the evening, together. In the studies above, the leg size changes measured were smaller, for example 8.3% at the knee with a pump plus stockings, and much of the change was fluid. Your result may be smaller or different.
Will they fit my calves?
One size that adjusts to the leg. The exact calf range is on the Fit page.
